I was tasked to come up with a child-proof card stock box to hold marijuana products. The challenge was to only use card stock in the product with no added parts. To be considered ‘child-proof’, it has to have a two-step action unlocking feature.

Conceptualizing / Prototyping

I began by dissecting and adding materials onto similar existing products like this cigarette box. It took a lot of chopping, sketching and figuring out dielines before being able to cut out tests on a laser cutter. A few concepts were tested but I finally found a design worth exploring deeper, which included an inner box that slides out. This box had to be pressed on both edges while being pulled up, solving the ‘two-action’ problem. Getting the tolerances correct took a few tries, especially while choosing a material thickness that worked best, but the final idea of the two piece slide-out box was born and perfected.
